It’s kind of crazy that we’re STILL stuck wondering what to do for major holidays almost a year since the COVID-19 disaster began. If you skipped Mother’s Day last year, you probably really want to do something super special for your mom this year. It’s always a great time to celebrate mom, so let’s check out some of the best pandemic Mother’s Day ideas!
I wanted to take a moment to let you know that this site uses affiliate links, and this post may include some of those.
1. A Special Mother’s Day Breakfast
If you’re lucky to live with mom or be able to safely visit, providing breakfast in bed is a classic that she’ll surely appreciate. Or you could drop off a homemade breakfast in a social-distance safe way.
But even if mom is far away, you might be able to have a special breakfast catered and sent to her.
Or perhaps send a recipe and ingredients for something super yum.
Or even just fresh fruit and flowers so she knows you are thinking of her, and wishing you could spend time with her in-person.
Even just curating locally made goodies can make mom feel appreciated! Look for items like fresh sourdough bread, cultured butter, fresh berries, fresh-squeezed orange juice, homemade yogurt, vegan desserts, etc. Stuff that the regular supermarkets likely don’t carry!
2. Make Homemade Cards
Homemade cards are always perfect for Mother’s Day, and can be given in person or sent in the mail.
Stay away from e-cards unless you end up being super last minute, and stick to something tangible.
Homemade cards can be kept for years and years to come, and provide a smile long after Mother’s Day.
Get this card-making kit if you want to make her something different than the hand-crafted cards she usually gets. These are very unique and beautiful!
3. Sing Songs Via Video Call/Zoom
Choose some songs to sing via video call or zoom to make mom feel special! Even just sending her a playlist she can listen to might do the trick.
Some of the most tear-jerking songs for Mother’s Day include:
- You’ll Be In My Heart (Tarzan)
- In My Daughter’s Eyes (Martina McBride)
- The Best Day (Taylor Swift)
- Mama’s Song (Carrie Underwood)
- A Song for Mama (Boyz II Men)
4. Order A Custom Photo Book (Or Make A Scrapbook!)
Moms love pictures of their children, and pictures never get old!
Put a new spin on some of your mother’s favorite memories by making a photo book (on Snapfish, Shutterstock and the like) or making a scrapbook!
You can get a scrapbook kit that will make things easier for you if you’re not super crafty.
Mom might also enjoy this as a group activity if the kids are young. Make sure you have all the supplies ready (including printed pictures!) so you can all get to work and complete several pages within an hour or two.
5. Send A Photo Explosion
Not sure what that is? It’s an awesome way to put a bunch of photos together to give as a gift!
The box “explodes” with awesome photos, then can be folded back up to put away neatly, if desired.
This makes another great Mother’s Day activity for mom to do with children, if possible!
6. Have a Backyard (or Park) Brunch
Why not throw mom a picnic brunch in the backyard or at a local park? Include all of mom’s most favorite foods, and don’t forget dessert!
Some parks are restricting use of the gazebos and/or grass areas, but others are allowing much more freedom, as long as you stay social-distanced.
Throwing mom her own personal picnic is sure to make her feel loved!
7. Take The Kids For The Day And Let Her REST!
Some moms would much rather spend Mother’s Day with their children than have a day of rest, so be sure to take mom’s personality in mind before going with this idea!
Giving mom a day of rest can really do SO much for her, and not just physically! While a day of rest can be a dream, time to herself can also help her mentally, emotionally, and spiritually!
BONUS: Get her this and this so she’ll have plenty to do in case she finds all that peaceful free time makes her so giddy that she cannot relax enough to sleep!

8. Set Up A Bubble Bath!
Today it’s mom’s turn to have an old-fashioned bubble bath!
If in person, draw her a warm bath with epsom salts, bath tea or a bath bomb and let her go to town!
Deck out the bathroom with warm, soft candlelight and rose petals.
Be sure to get her a copy of a book from her favorite author or genre! And take care of idea #9 on this list while she’s in there relaxing and gushing over how thoughtful the family is being this year!

9. Clean And Cook Dinner!
Mom would really love a break from the day to day! It’s super nice and awesome to make her breakfast and find a way to get her some free time to rest or practice self-care, but it would be even more awesome to have the entire day off!
While she’s taking a bubble bath, find a way to do what she would normally do so that she truly gets a break.
If you can’t handle both at the same time, pre-order dinner that you can heat up to be ready once she gets out.
Grab some of her favorite wine, and/or Martinelli’s Apple Cider, and get some luxury chocolate to help round out the night.
If there are younger kids and you can get them to bed while she does… whatever she wants to do, that would be SOOO awesome! Here are some sleep tips for kids that may help if that is not your strong suit!
10. Watch Lifetime Movies While Having A Pamper Session
We always loved watching Lifetime movie marathons with my mom. And it’s awesome to cry and laugh and just spend time together while sneaking in a little self-care!
Manicures and pedicures anyone?
Mom will feel so special to get some quality time and pampering in at the same time!
11. Have A Poetry Jam Session
Write poetry to mom to show her how much you love her! Try writing specific types of poetry such as a limerick or a palindrome!
Of course you can also try an acrostic poem, which tends to be easier– that’s the thing where you think of a word or sentence for each letter of mom’s name!
Read aloud then hand them to mom so she can savor forever. Print on fancy paper and place in a nice document box for an extra special touch!
